Heritage Open Days

Please note we will not be participating in Heritage Open Days in 2021, but we hope to participate again in 2022.

Every September some 40,000 volunteers across England organise 5,000 events to celebrate our fantastic history, architecture and culture. It's your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences in Buxton – all of which are free to explore!

During Heritage Open Days we throw open the Opera House doors for you to take a look inside one of the country’s finest examples of a Frank Matcham theatre design. Try the view from the Gods, sit in one of the boxes or simply admire the stunning decoration.

Our lovely volunteers will be on hand to answer any burning questions you might have about the history of our beautiful theatre.

If you're lucky you might bump into the perfectly delightful Edwardian actress Miss Lilian Violet Bowdine. Lilian will offer an insight into the history of theatre in Buxton over the past 200 years culminating in a visit to her favourite theatre, drawing back the curtain to reveal the secrets and gossip behind the theatrical legacy of Buxton.
