Celebrating a hundred years of women gaining the vote, we welcome one of the most prominent women of the last 50 years, Baroness Williams of Crosby.

Shirley Williams, the daughter of former Buxton resident and Testament of Youth author Vera Brittain, joined parliament in 1955 as a Labour MP, rising to the post of Education Minister in the Callaghan government of the late 70s. In 1981 she was one of the ‘Gang of Four’ who defected from Labour to set up the SDP. She is now regarded as an elder statesman of the Liberal Democrats, whose wisdom and experience continue to inspire the generations who have followed her into politics.
