This Chinese film provides some revealing insights into how the collapse of the Communist Party has left something of a vacuum in towns and cities that has been filled by mobsters and criminals. The film follows the life of Qiao - a smart and resourceful young woman - who is initially involved with violent gang leader Bin. Over time Bin’s grip over Qiao loosens but it is a slow and painful process. Evidently for some Chinese the worst aspects of capitalist life are intoxicating.
