Exile and refuge at the borders of Europe

A mother who puts her children into a refrigerated lorry and asks ‘what else could I do?’ A runaway teenager who comes of age on the streets and in abandoned buildings. A student who leaves his war-ravaged country behind because he doesn’t want to kill. Each of the thousands of people who come to Europe in search of asylum every year brings a unique story with them. Acclaimed journalist Daniel Trilling builds a portrait of the refugee crisis, seen through the eyes of the people who experienced it first-hand.

Lucy Popescu is a writer and editor whose latest refugee anthology came out in June. A Country to Call Home is about the experiences of young refugees and asylum seekers. Some wonderful children's writers, including Simon Armitage, David Almond, Brian Conaghan, Kit de Waal, Judith Kerr, Patrice Lawrence and Anna Perera, have contributed original stories, prose, memoir and poetry and Chris Riddell has provided illustrations throughout. It’s aimed at both children and young adults. Her earlier anthology, A Country of Refuge, a collection of writings about asylum seekers, included stories by Sebastian Barry, William Boyd, AL Kennedy, Marina Lewycka and Alex Wheatle, contributed original stories, prose, memoir and poetry.
