English Touring Opera returns to Buxton with three great operas encompassing love and war, comedy and epic tragedy.
Handel’s Giulio Cesare is a majestic opera in which the characters are driven to extreme feelings and actions, and in which the music strikes the heart.
A story of passion and revenge, featuring a treasure trove of great arias with immense dramatic intensity, the opera follows the events surrounding Julius Caesar’s conquest of Egypt, as well as his uneasy alliance and romance with fabled Egyptian queen, Cleopatra.754
James Conway’s much-praised 2020 production returns, setting Handel’s opera in the great power struggles between Britain and France in 18th century Europe. Music comes from the period instrument specialists of the Old Street Band and a choir formed of members of the Buxton Musical Society, conducted by Sergey Rybin.
