Friday lunchtime recitals by students from Manchester's internationally renowned Royal Northern College of Music.
The programme will include works by Giuliani, Villa-Lobos, Ponce and Brouwer.
Born in Hong Kong and educated in England from the age of 14, Julian Liu is currently based in Manchester undertaking a Master of Music in Performance degree at the Royal Northern College of Music, studying with internationally renowned guitarists Craig Ogden, Rory Russell (Aquarelle Guitar Quartet) and Tom McKinney.
Julian began his musical studies on the electric guitar at the age of 12. At high school in Norfolk he was introduced to jazz which in turn led him to the world of the classical guitar which has been his passion since the age of 18. Despite this late beginning on the classical guitar Julian achieved his ABRSM Grade 8 exam by the age of 19 along with the ABRSM Grade 8 music theory and the London College of Music electric guitar performance diploma. After high school, Julian undertook a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at Keele University graduating in 2018 with First Class Honours. He scored 90 in his final year recital, the highest mark ever awarded.
While completing his undergraduate study, Julian was awarded the Elizabeth Montfort Instrumental Scholarship and on graduation received the Jim Roberts Memorial Prize. He was also the Keele University Composer Fellow in his final year of study, which gave him the opportunity to compose a piece for solo guitar and string ensemble, written for the university’s partner – Love Music Trust’s String Sinfonia. Julian gave the premiere performance of the composition at the university in March 2018. During his time at Keele, he also ran the University Concert Society, hosted their lunchtime concert series and performed as soloist and chamber musician including a performance of Vivaldi’s Lute Concerto as soloist with the Keele Philharmonic Orchestra.
Julian has participated in masterclasses with international artists including Xuefei Yang, Gary Ryan, David Leisner and Julian Byzantine and attended the National Youth Jazz Collective Summer School in 2015.
Julian plays a 2017 Yulong Guo concert guitar.
