Andrew Birse violin
Chloe Randall cello

The programme will include works by Auerbach and Kodaly.

The Nexus Duo is an emerging ensemble comprising Andrew Birse (violin) and Chloe Randall (cello) who have played chamber music together in various guises since 2016. Starting as a piano quintet, then a piano trio, they decided to seek out works for violin and cello and have been performing as a string duo ever since. In various venues from concert halls to more unconventional spaces they present imaginative programmes, often including folk music from their homes in Scotland as well as baroque, late romantic, 20th century and contemporary works.

Born in Aberdeen, Andrew Birse now studies at the Royal Northern College of Music with Gina McCormack and James Clark. Passionate about Chamber Music, Andrew has performed with ensembles including the Rowan Quartet and the Scottish Ensemble. As Principal Second Violin with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland he has played in the Edinburgh Festival and the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. At the RNCM Andrew has participated in masterclasses with Mauricio Fuks and Levon Chilingirian alongside tuition from many of Britain’s leading chamber ensembles. He is also a keen singer, having been a choral scholar at St. Machar’s Cathedral and now regularly sings at St. Ann’s Church.

Born in Fife, Scotland, Chloe Randall started playing cello at the age of 8. She trained at the Junior Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where she studied with Betsy Taylor. Since beginning her studies at the Royal Northern College of Music she has received the Shirley Cattarall Award for Cello and the Amy Lindley Cello Prize. She has participated in solo masterclasses throughout Europe with internationally renowned cellists such as Leonard Elschenbroich, Jerome Pernoo, Xenia Jankovich and Miklos Perenyi. In 2018 she attended the Festival Pablo Casals where she studied with Niklas Schmidt, and in August 2019, the International Summer Academy of the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna. Notable recital performances have taken place in France, Austria and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
