We are delighted to welcome John Casken and Barry Millington to Buxton to discuss their new musical drama The Shackled King, based on Shakespeare’s King Lear.
The work follows the success of the duo's Kokoschka’s Doll, which received a tremendous reception in Buxton in 2017.
John Casken is known as one of the most distinctive composers of his generation. His work ranges across every genre and his titles reveal his inspiration from both literature and legend, as well as landscape and the visual arts. He currently lives in Northumberland, but he has a strong connection with the Peak District, having lived in Whaley Bridge for 13 years.
He is joined by Barry Millington, chief music critic for the London Evening Standard and the editor of The Wagner Journal. Barry Millington co-founded and runs the ensemble Counterpoise, who commissioned the Shackled King and accompany the performance.
The Shackled King is being performed on Friday 23 July at 7.15pm at Buxton Opera House.
