Trent Opera are one of the most highly acclaimed non-professional theatre companies.
They have been performing the works of Gilbert & Sullivan at the International Festival since 1996 winning the coveted Champion’s Trophy and numerous individual awards.
Princess Ida is the only Savoy opera to have three acts and is a much more serious work than any of the G&S operas that preceded it. Sullivan’s delightful score is closer to grand opera in its harmonies and ensembles than any of his earlier works.
Bold feminist Princess Ida founds a women's university, and teaches that women are superior to men. Prince Hilarion (to whom she had been married in infancy) and his friends, disguise themselves as women students to gain entry to the castle and a comic battle of the sexes ensues with hilarious results.
