Benni is 9. She is bright, energetic, articulate, foul-mouthed and given to outbursts of violence. Her mother and siblings can’t cope with Benni but, as it turns out, neither can social services. A ‘system crasher’ is the term used to describe a child who can’t be placed with a foster family. Drugs could be a solution for calming Benni (Helena Zengel is tremendous here) but her caseworker hopes to find other, less invasive, answers. A bold and visceral film from Germany and an impressive debut by director Nora Fingscheidt.
