Big Session Walk

The May Day Morning Walk

Meeting at Buxton Train Stationbutton--dates-and-timesDates & Times

Oysterband's John Jones leads the second of two local walk around Buxton, finishing in the Big Session Beer Festival Marquee.

All walkers must be responsible for their own safety and ability to complete the walk. Further details of the routes will be available during the Big Session weekend. Walks are free and there is no registration required for either walk.

Meeting point: Buxton Railway Station, 9.15am

This walk is a little more strenuous. Please judge carefully whether you are capable of completing it and be wary of the weather on the day. Come prepared.

We will catch the 9.27 train from Buxton for the 6 minute journey to Dove Holes station. Please purchase your own train ticket ahead of time. This is the May Bank Holiday and so we will double check the train time at the weekend.

We will leave from Dove Holes station at 9.45 (for any who drive there). The start is a ¾ mile walk along Cowlow Lane to a gate that may or may not open so we may have to climb over it. We then have a steep ascent of some 60m up a grassy slope to Lady Low which is a grand viewpoint with Kinder in the distance. We continue up another 60m ascent to Hob Tor and then along Black Edge with some walls to climb over along the way. We pass a trig point which at 507m is the highest point of the walk with superb views west to Shining Tor. We continue along Black Edge to meet Flint Clough where we descend into Buxton, coming out by the Palace Hotel with busy roads to negotiate to return to the Big Session Beer Festival Marquee for a final drink and farewells.

Note: There are walls to climb and a steep descent into Buxton.

We expect the walk to take around 3 hours – 9.45 to around 12.45.
