About Northern Reeds
Relax and enjoy our lunchtime Coffee Concert. With a complimentary coffee (or tea) and biscuits, our daytime recitals are the perfect musical pit stop.
All musicians appear by the kind permission of the Royal Northern College of Music.
Northern Reeds was founded in 2019 by five graduates of the Royal Northern College of Music and are the UK's first established reed quintet. This new and exciting chamber music format comprises five reed instruments of the woodwind family: the oboe, saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, and bassoon.
In 2024, Northern Reeds released their debut CD of new commissions alongside music by Robert Schumann, available on Spotify now. That summer, the quintet performed their entire album at the prestigious Chipping Campden Music Festival. In 2025, Northern Reeds featured first in Lincon's chamber series at the Blue Room.
Northern reeds are the winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society Henderson Award 2022, RNCM Fewkes Prize 2022, the June Emerson Prize 2022, and the RNCM Christopher Rowland Proze Audience Vote 2022. The group has performed in renowned venues like the Bridgewater Hall, the Stoller Hall, and Hallé St Peter’s. They are the first UK group to be admitted into Calefax's International Reed Quintet Network and recently had the pleasure of working alongside the group in judging their annual Calefax Composers Competition.
Alongside this, Northern Reeds has commissioned new works for reed quintet by composers such as Kev Wong, Eden Longson, and Jos Cole. The quintet was recently the subject of articles in magazines by CASSGB and the British Double Reed Society.
