Accessible performances
What is a an Audio Described performance?
An audio described performance is designed to make theatre more accessible to people with sight loss.
During the performance, a trained audio describer provides live narration through a headset, describing visual elements that aren’t spoken aloud. This can include facial expressions, costumes, movement, scene changes, and key visual moments — all carefully timed so they don’t interfere with dialogue or music.
If you don't required this service and are not using a head set the performance will remain unchanged.
Who benefits from Audio Description?
Audio described performances benefit a wide range of audience members, including:
- Blind and partially sighted people
- Long-sighted people who do not identify as blind, but may still miss important visual details, particularly in large venues or complex productions
- People with visual processing difficulties, who may find spoken description helpful
- Anyone who may find it difficult to follow visual storytelling without additional explanation, such as audience members with learning disabilities or neurodivergent people
What is a Signed performance?
A signed performance features a live BSL interpreter on/next to the stage and communicating what the performers are saying.
Who is this for?
These performances are for anyone who is D/deaf or hard of hearing and uses BSL (British Sign Language).
