Summer this year sees some very special shows arriving at Buxton Opera House, along with playing host to the Buxton International Festival.
After the success of West Side Story, Buxton Opera House will be once again be welcoming talented young local performers to the stage under the expert supervision of a professional creative team. This year the stars of the future will take on two contrasting musicals Oliver! and Rent. Oliver! is perhaps one of the most well-known British musicals of all time set in the poverty-stricken streets of Victorian London. Rent in contrast is a vibrant and contemporary version of the opera La Bohème set in New York’s East Village, following struggling young artists fighting to survive the approaching millennium.
The power of laughter can be a powerful thing, so it’s lucky we have some comic greats joining us this summer. From the outrageously camp show Julian ClaryBorn to Mince, and an evening of improvised genius from Paul Merton’s Impro Chums to a comedian with an unmistakable laugh and deadpan delivery Jimmy Carr Terribly Funny will all be here to help tickle your funny bone.
If informative talks are more your thing then businesswoman known for her retail acumen Mary Portas in Conversation is bound to spark your interest. Drawing on decades of business experience, her new tour is packed full of tips and honest advice on how to be more productive and happier in your working life.
Back once again is the acclaimed and always popular Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. Opening this year’s festival is a captivating performance of The Mikado, which successfully combines satire, humour and memorable musical numbers. Spread over 6 days, Gilbert and Sullivan fans can enjoy The Gondoliers, HMS Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance amongst others.
Of course, the big part of any summer in Buxton is in July, when Buxton Opera House becomes host to the Buxton International Festival. This year the Festival will be bringing a whole range of rare operas, stunning music and talks from a range of celebrated authors, musicians and more.
