Join us for Platform 3’s very own “Book Club”, every Tuesday during term time.  A light hearted and refreshing opportunity to explore new novels and plays or revisit your favourite ones.

Sessions will involve:

  • Ice breakers and introductions to each text.
  • Reading sections of text as a group (members do not have to read aloud if they don’t want to).
  • Lively discussions and accessible activities on the themes and characters.
  • Opportunities to talk to or find out more about the authors/playwrights.
  • Opportunities to make new friends who share similar interests.

You do not need to have read any of the texts, but please bring a copy with you. There will be some copies available to borrow on the day. Each session is a stand alone session so if you miss a session it doesn’t matter.

This term’s Readers Group sessions will be focusing on the theme of Children and War.

Starting with Michael Frayn’s SPIES these are texts that explore a child’s experience of living in wartime, as seen through a child’s eyes. Join us as we explore the many touching and humorous moments in all the texts as well as intrigue, adventure and moments of heartache.

We will be looking at the following texts:

Spies – Michael Frayn (novel)
Kisses on a Postcard – Terence Frisby (novel and play)
When Hitler stole Pink Rabbit – Judith Kerr (novel)

(With reference to the Diary of Anne Frank , the Kite Runner and the Tiger who came to Tea)

*Please note that all the novels contain some disturbing themes.  Should you wish to know more before booking please contact Allie Spencer on [email protected]

The sessions will be led by Platform 3 Manager Allie Spencer. As well as a practitioner and director, Allie is also a trained teacher in Drama and English so knows how to bring books and plays to life and make them accessible to all ages. The sessions take place in the Pavilion Arts Centre Bar – bring your own coffee!
