About Dr Peter Collinge

Finding and keeping domestic servants was a perennial quest.

Aside from seeking new positions, servants absconded, were dismissed, became too old or ill, or were poached by rival establishments.

From the dubious origins of servants’ register offices to country houses, Dr Collinge brings the lived experiences of domestic servants vividly to life. In an illustrated presentation, Peter will explore both benevolent and cruel employers of hard-working, dedicated and, occasionally, rogue staff. Without them, great estates, town houses and suburban villas and their occupants could not function.
