Buxton Opera House is proud to share that its Vice-Patron and former board member, Louise Potter, has been awarded an MBE by King Charles III in his 2025 Birthday Honours list. The honour, which was announced this past week, has been bestowed to Louise for “services to the Economic Development of Buxton”.

During her tenure as High Sheriff of Derbyshire, Louise organised two very special fundraising concerts at Buxton Opera House (One Night Only in 2022, and One Night Only… Again in 2023) with proceeds going towards vital upcoming accessibility and technical redevelopments to the backstage areas of the 1903 Matcham Theatre. Louise’s engagement in the community has, however, been instrumental to not just the Opera House. In 1982 Louise bought the Old Hall Hotel in Buxton, a venue rich in history, but in need of repair and fully renewed its place in the heart of the town. In 2001 she purchased and upgraded No 6 The Square Tea Rooms, now managed by her daughter Emma, which sits directly opposite the theatre. Additionally, Louise’s work with Vision Buxton, Visit Peak District, as well as Buxton International Festival as Vice-President, and her distinguished tenure as High Sheriff, reflects her dedication to the area and marks her as a cornerstone of Buxton’s cultural and economic evolution.

“Louise is a fantastic supporter of the Opera House. Her commitment and generosity have helped make the theatre what it is today. She was a wise guiding hand on the Board and we are proud that she continues to work with us as our Vice-Patron. We are all absolutely delighted that she has been awarded this honour”.

Judy Simons, Chair of Board of Trustees

"Louise has been an ardent supporter of the iconic Buxton Opera House for many years, both as a longstanding trustee and now Vice-Patron. Her warmth, experience and sense of fun are always a joy on any occasion. Her knowledge of Buxton, both in the business and artistic community is immense. Her advice always vital and appreciated. Louise is also truly passionate about the forthcoming capital project which will secure the future for the much-loved Buxton Opera House with much needed improvement to access and technical facilities. Her support in this endeavour has been outstanding. All of us at the Buxton Opera House congratulate Louise on this well-deserved honour”.

Paul Kerryson, CEO

Buxton Opera House gives Louise a resounding standing ovation for this thoroughly fitting accolade and is proud to have her as its Vice-Patron in this exciting next chapter.
