News Story

On Thursday 30 January, the team at Buxton Opera House were thrilled to accept the award for 'Excellence in Primary & Early Years' at the awards ceremony in London.

We are honoured to have been recognised for our efforts with the Satellite Opera House, an innovative scheme that provides isolated schools in the High Peak area with access to drama and musical theatre provisions with the help of experts.

It enables schools to hold specialised after-school activities and offer exclusive development opportunities for children, including a weekly Artist in Residence programme with bespoke performing arts workshops, and further school staff training provisions to continue the inclusion of arts in their curriculum.

An annual event hosted by both Drama & Theatre Magazine and Music Teacher Magazine (part of the Mark Allen Group), the Music and Drama Education Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in Music and Drama education, recognising individuals and organisations that have made a significant impact in these fields, showcasing excellence in teaching, innovation, and leadership.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and recognise our fellow category nominees for the hard work they have done for their own communities: Barnet Education Arts Trust, MishMash Productions and Nottingham City Libraries, Performatots Pre-School, Speech Bubbles: Drama for Communication, The Birmingham Rep and Birmingham Early Years Network, and The Grange Festival.

Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre received a further nomination for the 'Outstanding Drama Initiative' Award in recognition of our annual Work Experience scheme.

We are delighted to receive this award that recognises the work that Buxton Opera House is doing in the High Peak primary schools. We are grateful to all our practitioners who have contributed to this project and who have instilled valuable social and performance skills into the young people they have worked with.

Allie Spencer, Head of Creative Learning & Engagement

Buxton Opera House is proud to offer these experiences at no cost to the schools or the participants, which is possible with generous thanks to funding from Arts Council England. We are also grateful for the support of The John Thaw Foundation, The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, The Boris Karloff Charitable Foundation, and The Kirby Laing Foundation.
