120th Anniversary Open Day

7 September 2023

On Sunday 27 August, as part of our continued 120th Anniversary celebrations, we opened our doors for an exclusive look behind the curtain, to see first hand what goes on behind the scenes of Buxton Opera House.

Despite the customary Buxton rain, the day was a roaring success with local residents, as well as visitors travelling the distance to explore our beautiful Matcham theatre. As one of nineteen working Matcham theatres in the country, we were thrilled to offer tours, provide glimpses into the backstage areas and provide additional information into our special history.

The day also incorporated live performances on stage from Platform 3’s Kaleidoscope Community Choir, Buxton-based band The TR3s and our fabulous summer school company, with sharings from their recent production of Frozen JR. Visitors of all ages joined in the fun with displays from our costume department, theatre-themed children’s activities and even a competition with tickets to our pantomime up for grabs!

We’d like to extend a big thank you to our staff and volunteers who came together to make the day such a success. Thank you to our sponsors The Duke of Devonshire’s Charitable Trust and Swizzles for their support and of course, a big thank you to everyone who attended the open day.

Your support and generous donations ensure that we can continue to offer entertainment, community and education to the town of Buxton for another 120 years.

Thank you!
